Switching Phones? 4 Steps to Protect Your Data
May 15, 2025
Making the switch to a new phone can feel overwhelming. You’ve already spent time researching the best device for your needs—maybe even set up a brand-new phone plan. But just when you think you're done, there's another important step: making sure your data moves safely with you. Don’t worry, we’re here to guide you through the process. Whether you're upgrading to the latest iPhone or a new Android from Samsung or Google, we’ll help make your transition smooth and secure.
1. Back Up Your Data
Before you do anything, make sure to back up your information. Whether you're selling, trading in, or donating your phone, you'll need a copy of your data for your new device.
- For iPhone users: Use iCloud Backup or iTunes/Finder Backup
- For Android users: Use Google One Backup or your phone manufacturer’s backup service (e.g., Samsung Smart Switch)
2. Unlink Accounts
Check that your phone is no longer linked to any of your accounts, especially if you use multi-factor authentication. Unlink it from services like Microsoft, Apple, and Google, and make sure it's not listed as a trusted device.
- For iPhone users: Sign out of iCloud, iMessage, and FaceTime, and turn off Find My iPhone
- For Android users: Remove your Google account via Settings > Accounts and turn off Find My Device
Also, check services like:
3. Restore to Factory Settings
Resetting your phone to factory settings will erase all your personal data, including account info, passwords, messages, photos, and videos.
- For iPhone users: Erase all content and settings via Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone
- For Android users: Reset to factory settings via Settings > System > Reset > Factory data reset
4. Remove SIM and SD Cards
If your phone has a SIM card, take it out. It may contain personal details, and if you plan to keep your phone number, ask if you can transfer it to your new device. If you don't plan to reuse it, be sure to destroy the SIM card. If there's an SD card, remove that too.
Make sure you’ve backed everything up before doing this—once it’s done, there’s no going back!
Once your new phone is set up, make sure it's secured with an auto-lock feature, keep it updated, and regularly back up your data. Switching to a new phone doesn’t have to mean starting from scratch or risking your personal information. With a little preparation and the right steps, you can protect your data and start enjoying your new device with confidence.
